Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi there,

I am generating the table of contents and there are some headers that are appearing in the TOC that I dont want to be there. What is the best way to get certain headers to never added to the TOC in the first place. Is the best Method to change the style to a non-Header name?

Or is there some other trick?

Cheers,

Noah

First let's clarify some terminology :) It would seem that you're referring
to HeadINGs as opposed to HeadERs. I don't mean to niggle, but both terms
are used in Word & have completely different meanings.

It sounds like you have Levels assigned to the styles which you _do not_
want in the TOC... Most likely because they're based on styles which have
the same Levels. One option to avoid the issue is to create 2 identical
styles but include Level 1 or whatever in the one but omit it from the
other. That would allow formatting the headings with the same appearance but
the headings styled without the Level would not get picked up in the TOC.

Hi there,

thanks for the advice. where do I set the "Level" for a particular style? I am having trouble finding the setting.

What is the eastiest way to copy a style to a newly created style?

Levels are set in the Paragraph formatting dialog. When you go into Modify
Style click the Format button at the bottom, select Paragraph, then pick
Body Text or the preferred level from the Outline Level list.

As for replicating a Style, every way I know of is an equally small amount
of work. One option is to select a paragraph that has the original style
applied to it then click the New Style button. Name the new style, select
'Style Based On: (no style)' & change whatever attributes you want to be
different from the original.
