horizontal lines

I am running Word XP on XP Home with an Athlon.

When I select text (and perhaps at other times) often
black horizontal lines appear on the screen and remain
until I close the document and reopen it. They are not
objects as I cannot select them. Also I sometime lose the
bottoms of characters and the formatting appears
strangely. Again when I close the doc and reopen it is
fine.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the problem.

Word is particularly demanding on the graphics driver and your symptoms
indicate either you need to update your graphics driver or that the graphics
card you have is inadequate to cope with the demands. Occasionally it may be
the printer driver causing the problem, so make sure that you delete and
reinstall the printer driver (check to see if there is a new version of that
too) before investing in a better graphics setup.
