i have used hotmail (not outlook) for nearly 10 years and as of the last
year, maybe, messages i keep in my inbox or other folders gets deleted. last
week, it deleted an entire folder. i cannot find an auto archive option, or
anything else suggesting why this is happening. i'm really fed up with
hotmail at this point. anyone having this same experience or have any
suggestions?
So does "not outlook" mean you are still using only the webmail
interface to your Hotmail account or are you now using Outlook to
connect to your Hotmail account? The fact that you cannot "find an auto
archive option" (which is described in the included help in Outlook)
indicates that you are NOT using Outlook to access your Hotmail account
which would mean your post is off-topic to this group.
If you are using the old (classic or MSN) Hotmail account, you lose all
e-mails if the account has been idle for over 30 days. If you convert
to or have a Windows Live Hotmail account, the idle expiration is 120
days.
If you are now using Outlook to connect to your Hotmail account, you
will need to install the Outlook Connector add-on (get it from
Microsoft's download site). Microsoft is dropping DAV support (the
scripting language used to communicate with Microsoft's HTTP mail hosts)
from it Hotmail accounts and replacing it with Deltasync. While both
Outlook and Outlook Express support DAV, neither of them support
Deltasync. For Outlook, you need the add-on to add support for
Deltasync. Can't do anything for Outlook Express (support died for it
back in 2002) and will have to go to Windows Live Mail.
Anyone else using your computer? Do you leave it logged in? When it
has been idle, does a password-protected screen saver kick in? Do you
have Windows configured to bypass the login screen (i.e., auto-login) so
that anyone can power up your computer and do anything they want using
your login account? If so, and because you are probably letting IE
cache up passwords, and because the other user is using your account,
they can log into any account for which you cached its password,
including Hotmail.
Maybe it is time to change your password on your Hotmail account. It is
possible it got hacked. Make sure to use a STRONG password. Also, make
sure all the registration information is correct, like your alternate
e-mail address (needed if you use their "forgot password" procedure to
get the new password after a reset), personal information, secret
question, etc.
