Hourglass every 10 seconds

Word 2002 (Office XP)
Whenever Word is the active window, the hourglass appears
every 10 seconds for a couple of seconds. While the
hourglass is displayed, typing does not appear on the
screen, although it "catches up" after the hourglass
disappears.

It does not appear related to autosave, spell check,
grammer check, etc., as the problem persists when these
options are turned off.

The problem does not appear when another app is the
active Window, even though Word is also running.

No viruses are present.

Any thoughts?

Hi Cliff,

Did you recently install Office? You may be
seeing the side effects of Office building its
initial index of the contents of your hard drive
during 'idle' moments on the PC. See if indexing
is enabled by opening the search taskpane and looking
at the options in the 'Basic search' task pane.

It may also be an outdated graphics card driver
or having Speech turned on that can cause this.
