Hover Buttons

Probably has been asked before, but being new I am trying
to insert a hover button. All seems to go well, except
after I save my page and then go to preview, the button I
created, let's say a blue one, shows up as an empty
rectangle with a little 4 box white square in the upper
left corner, and nothing happens when I roll over it.
What am I doing wrong?

Hover buttons requires Java from Sun or JVM from MS. MS is
no longer allowed to distribute the JVM so new machines do
not have it. IE will only show an outlined box, other
browsers (eg Mozilla) will say that a plug in is needed.

For these reasons, it is recommended not to use them

I don't think Mike's explanation is correct. I have a 2 week old system with
Windows XP and the hover buttons work just fine. They do not, however, show
up in FrontPage preview but they do show up in IE when I load the page
locally (that is, http://localhost/pagename.htm) . FrontPage preview is
useless for other things as well. It's much better to keep a separate
browser open and pointed to your page locally. For a preview, save the page
from FP, switch to the browser and refresh it.

Reply at the top where the FrontPage news group people prefer it.

Mike's reply is correct. The original XP with IE6 shipped without JVM. SP1
installed it.
Subsequent updates to IE 6 do not have it. Therefore not *all* machines
will have JVM unless it is downloaded and installed from
http://www.java.sun.com/

As a result most people have stopped using Hover buttons as they are not
dependable

Mike's explanation IS correct. However, the JVM was re-instated after years
of haranguing between Sun and Microsoft, and the JVM was included in a
Windows Update. So, as long as your updates are current, you may indeed have
it. But there are quite a few who do not. I would take his advice.

Sorry, but it seems that this NG is preferential to
top-posting. Sorry, the attitude conveyed by your text is
not constructive. If you have a valid complaint, be
constructive and write "This group prefers bottom posting.
Please do so in the future"

XP & 2003 do not contain MS JVM. XP SP1 (not available)
does install it. SP1a (currently distributed) has it
removed again. Windows Update does have it, but will only
recommend it if it detects JVM or Sun Java already on the
machine.

Most of the worthless AOL CD's have the MS version on them
if you want to install it.

Alternative browsers will not use the MS JVM, they must use
Sun

Actually, AFAIK (and I've been around here for quite awhile) there is no
rule OR convention in this group for the format of a reply, and it seems
rather silly to be having this conversation at all...

You; of course, are correct. And my venting is over.

OK, thanks for the info.
