How are date links identified?

I have created a couple of hammock tasks through the 'copy/paste link'
procedure. To update/break these links selectively how do I make sense of
MS's naming in the Edit/Links view?? Is there a way to select the linked
date field or task and update the link from there without going to
Edit/Links??

Thanks!

If you're talking about updating the values in the linked cells, that
happens automatically every time the file recalculates and doesn't require
manual updating anyway. If you're talking about breaking the links, either
use the Edit Links or just delete the data coming in to the linked cells and
they will revert to normal calculated fields.

Hi Steve

When using the Edit Links option to break a link, how is the specific link
identified, i.e. how do I pick the right one from the list of links? The
displyed names seem to be internally assigned ids with no obvious
significance or reference to the source/destination of the link.

For hammock tasks I don't even bother. I just go to the start and finish
fields on the hammock task and hit delete, erasing the linked data and
letting Project's normal calculations take over. But you are correct -
tasks have an ID number, the sequence number in the far left column of the
data table, and also something called the Unique ID, a sequence number
associated with the task when it's first created. The difference is that
the ID number is sequential without gaps and can change for tasks when the
data table is re-sorted. The Unique ID is static after the task is created,
it doesn't change if the table is sorted, and can be discontinuous if some
tasks in the list are subsequently deleted. I think the links on a hammock
task refer to the Unique ID of the source of the data.

Hello Steve, hello Siggy,
I just tried the numbering of such links. It seems that Project number the
links
Project1!LINK_1
Project1!LINK_3
Project1!LINK_5

the
links like:
Project1!LINK_1
Project1!LINK_3
Project1!LINK_5
Project1!LINK_7
Project1!LINK_9

where the numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. don't map with the Task ID nor with the
Unique IDs.

Yep I see that too - I tried it with only one link and it must have been the
luck of the draw that mine said "Project1!LINK_3" and the task that supplied
the date just happened to be Unique ID #3.
