How can attachments saved in pst be deleted?

It seems as all attachments are saved in the pst-file, thus this file grows
in size. When deleting and then compressing the pst-file the size of the pst
should decrease. This is also true for my colleague but my pst does not
decrease in size when doing this. Why? I guess there is somewhere a box
"Delete attach when deleting mail" or something similar, but I can't find it.
Does anyone know?

If you have attachments that you wish to remove from the e-mail message while
keeping the message itself, you should be able to open that message
(double-click) and the single click on the attachment inside the message and
press Delete on your keyboard. Then close the e-mail message and tell it to
save (it should promt you).

Also, be sure you regularly delete your deleted items (as well as your sent
messages). Any attachments in those areas are adding to your PST size.
Trust me, I know all about these things because we have users here who delete
messages but never empty their deleted items. I've cut someone's PST file
down by 450 MB just by emptying the deleted items.
