How can highlight a series of email for deleting?

I'd like to be able to highlight a series of emails for deleting without
having to click on each one. Is there a way to click on the first and last
in a series and highlight all in between?

Click on the first in the series, hold down the Shift key then click on the
last in the series

You use the same keystrokes that you use in Windows Explorer to select
specific files (Ctrl+click) or a range of them (click & Shift+click on
the endpoints).
