How can I add a Horizontal Line button to the toolbar?

Word 2003; previously using Word 2000.

I regularly insert Horizontal Lines into documents I write. Currently I
have to do that by using Format -> Borders and Shading -> Horizontal
Line, and then wait a very long time until all different image samples
are displayed.

This is rather annoying, as I just want the standard HTML <HR> inserted.

In WD2000 I was able to get a Horizontal Line button into the toolbar -
it looked something like this ⊟

However I seem to be unable to do this in WD2003; any suggestions?

Thanks!

You can add a button by going to Tools - Customize - click on the commands
tab (the one in the middle). On your left in the categories column choose
All commands. Now look for the insert horizontal line command in the
commands column. When you find it drag it with your left mousebutton to the
toolbar of your choice. A vertical line will appear, release your
mousebutton when you reach the right spot.

Also consider using the tables and borders toolbar to insert horizontal
lines. On the borders button, first row there is a horizontal line button,
which automatically inserts a grey horizontal line, once you placed it,
double click on it to adjust according to your needs.

Pat,
Note that there is also a graphical horizontal line in the commands list. If
you drag that one to a toolbar you will get the dialog you mentioned. Won't
do much about the speed though.

With the customize dialog open (Tools > Customize) open the Drawing toolbar.
Holding down the control key so that it copies, drag the line button from
the Drawing toolbar to the toolbar you want it on. Close the dialog box.

To draw a horizontal line, hold the shift key down as you create the line.
This "constrains" the line to exact angles and will help you keep it
horizontal.

The Horizontal Line Pat wants is not the drawing line but the one in Format
| Borders and Shading. It is available on the Borders palette on the
Formatting toolbar and on the Tables and Borders toolbar.

Thank you for all the replies. Yes, I want the simple, HTML-style
horizontal line. But with all the suggestions above I was unable to make
a button. Looks like I have to continue with the Borders and Shading tool.

Got it!! Added the Borders and Tables toolbar permanently, then changed
the Borders dropdown to Horizontal line; voilà - I have a Horizontal
Line button. Just one click, and the line is inserted.

Thanks again everybody!

Do you not have the Borders palette button on your Formatting toolbar
already? It seems to be one of the default buttons, or at least one that you
can add by clicking the arrow at the end of the toolbar and choosing Add or
Remove Buttons | Formatting.
