How can I animate the drawing of a line

I am trying to have a line appear in an animated slide as it is drawn and not
just have it appear. The line would indicate the route to be taken on an
underlying map. Any ideas?

PhillBatts,
You can draw straight lines or freeform lines one after the other and
animate them with the wipe effect, carefully choosing the direction. Apply
the wipe effect "after previous" to tie the whole thing together. Off course
consider also the speed at which the line must flow.
All this can easily be done in PPT 2002/2003.

Instructions for PPT 2002/2003:

Click on the line to select it.
Click Slide Show > Custom Animation
In your animation Task Pane, choose Add Effect > Entry
Select the Wipe animation (also select the direction from which you would
like it to wipe -- or write).

Does that answer your question?

Thanks Luc,

The only problem when trying this is the direction of wipe, if the line is
wavy and close to the 45 dgree angle on the screen it does not wipe in as
drawn.

Thanks Sandy,

Having tried that with a wavy free form line it works well as long as the
line is not close to the 45 degree point because then it wipes in in chunks
and not along the curve as it was drawn.

Chirag,

I have installed your add in and it does add a lot interesting effects but I
am trying to get a free form curve to appear in the precise way it was drawn.

Having wiping with a wavy free form line it works well as long as the line
is not close to the 45 degree point because then it wipes in in chunks and
not along the curve as it was drawn.
Any other suggestions?

In that case, draw the line in sections. For example:

First section: Wipe right
Second section: Wipe from bottom (set timeing to: after previous)
Third section: Wipe right (after previous)

Repeat as needed.

Phil,
You have to draw the line in different parts, which maybe very tiny
depending on the complexity of your line.
Of course this will mean a lot of work but the line will appear almost
perfectly, exactly the way you want it.

A 'trick' that I use is to have a circle (autoshape) that I animate
with one or more motion paths. Of course, you could use an image of a
car or something.

I also have a solid line (or a series of solid lines) that show up
after each movement of the above object completes. So, you see this
circle moving across the map and as it does it "leaves" behind a series
of colored lines that hightlight the route.
