How can I categorize one occurrence of a recurring appointment?

This was possible in the 2003 version, but I am unable to do so now - does
anyone have an idea how to do this?

As far as I know you can't; it's also not possible in OL03.

Since a recurring item is only a single item (use a table view and you'll
see that) and the recurrences themselves are not distinct, it;s easy to
understand why.

You can e.g. change the date for a single occurence and create an exception.
Why isn't that possible with categories?

Beats me. You'll have to ask the authors.
