How can I delete dash lines in a Word Doc?

Using Word in XP to do a two column document and dash lines across a column
appear. I cannot find what I have done to cause them nor can I delete them
or manoeuvre them. They cause spaces between written lines which I cannot
close and dictate how I develop my work.
