How can I do this (surround with oval)

I use WORD 97.
I have a document already written/saved.

However, there are a few words I would like to put in an oval. I highlighted
the word and clicked border but I don't see an option for an oval border. I
tried the drawing toolbar, but it just replaces the word with an oval.

How can I just highlight a word or phrase and surround it with an oval?

Put the ellipse In Front of Text, with No Fill.

Use a drawing item. You will probably have to tweak it a bit to make it fit
your word. And you will probably have to move the text forward.
