how can i erase text from a scanned document

To edit a doc you need to scan using OCR software, usually supplied with
your scanner software.
You can somewhat crudely edit if you open with a graphics editing type of
software.

It depends on what form the scanned image takes. If its a bitmap (or
JPG) then convert it to text with an OCR program and then edit in the
normal way. If you don't have an OCR program then either get or borrow
one, or you must resort to using a photo editing program like PhotoPaint.

Assuming you are using MODI 2003, place a "blank" "text box" annotation
over the area to be erased, and then make "annotations" permanent.

You need a decent graphics editing program. What you're asking can be a real
booger.

It is an image. As JoAnn stated, you have your work cut out for you if
you want "edit" the image in the area you are calling "text".
