How can I format a PPT background picture to be transparent? Tha.

I've been at this for about two hours now, and after much Internet searching
I'm about to give up! I want to use a picture as the background for a
PowerPoint presentation, but the color is too bold. Thus, I'd like to change
the transparency to something lighter, possibly even one color. I know it
can be done, because I've seen it before, but I simply can't figure it out.
Thanks so much for any help!!!

In Powerpoint, right-click on the picture that you're using as the
background, left-click on Format Picture, and left-clickon the Picture tab.
In the center of the dialog box, you will see slider controls for brightness
and contrast. Increase the brightness and decrease the contrast until the
picture is de-bolded to your satisfaction. Click on OK.

And for a third method you can insert the picture as a background on your Slide
Master and then create a rectangle of your choice and give it a fill of any
color of your choice. Set the transparency to 25% and then experiment with
other settings to get more or less overtone. The color you choose plus the
amount of transparency can give you some very interesting results. For example,
shades of brown will give a sepia tone. Send the rectangle to back.
