How can I get captions the way I want them?

I want to add captions to figures like this:

Figure 1. xxxx ...

The word 'Figure' and '1' should be in oblique script and should not be
bold.

However, when I try to use the 'caption' facility in MS Word it seems to
insist that 'Figure 1' should be in bold and not oblique.

How can I get figure captions the way I want them.

When you insert a caption, Word formats it with the Caption paragraph
style. You can modify this style to suit your needs. For more
