How can I get my Excel icons to display correctly in saved docs?

All of my saved Excel documents appear with an unusual icon, not the Excel
icon next to them when I am looking at my files--how do I get them to display
correctly?

Open windows Explorer (not internet explorer)
tools|Folder options|File types tab
Scroll down and select "XLS Microsoft Excel Worksheet"
click the advanced button
click the Change Icon button

Choose the one you want.

When I tried to change it in Explorer as suggested, the icon that shows up
is the normal Excel icon yet none of my documents show this icon.
