How can I get Office Pro 2003 to recognize my .xls files?

All my xls files have generic windows icons next to them in My Documents and
when double click them, I'm asked whether I want the computer to find a
program to open them with or would I like to select from a list. Even after
I select Excel and open the file, the icon remains generic! Suggestions?

You've tried in Explorer, Tools>Folder Options>File types and ensuring xls
files are associated with excel?
