How can I group cells and add the numbers together.

I have a column with student ids 1-5 and the number can repeat in any given
row and each row outlines how much a student has paid over a period of time.

Question How do I group all the instances of 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 together
and add the amount paid to get a total for each student.

Hi Adp967,
I hope I understand what you are saying, but click on the cell you want
the total to show up..

type in the cell =sum(
and then highlight all the cells you want added and hit enter
should get something like
=sum(A2:A10)

that will add up the total for whatever you select.

Hi
have a look at SUMIF. e.g.
=SUMIF(A:A,1,B:B)

also take a look at pivot tables

Another option is to use the Data- filter- Autofilter. Highlight the area
that contains the student numbers only then go to the Data Menu, filter, and
Autofilter. This will put a drop down menu, and you can choose each student
number and see a total.

To see a total of the chosen items skip a line at the bottom of your data
and type
=subtotal(9,a1:a66) . This is a dynamic sum funtion so you can see the
total when you filter for the student's number.
