How can I have a header and footer on only the first page of a do.

I have a letterhead header and footer that I'm trying to save in a word
document so that faculty can open it and type a letter. I have page 2 coming
up blank, but the header/footer show up on odd page numbers, with even blank.
How can I get the header/footer to appear ONLY on the first page?

But a section break at the end of the first age, then on page two open the header and footer, de-select "same as previous" and delete the text.

Eek, don't do that. Go to File | Page Setup, Layout tab. You accidentally
checked the box for "different odd and even" when you should have just
checked "different first page." (under Headers and Footers)

Unnecessary section breaks just increase the chances of corrupting a doc.

A section break is "unnecessary" in this instance because the same thing can
be better accomplished by using the "Different first page" setting. Section
breaks are also unnecessary for the sole purpose of changing the
header/footer if the header/footer text replicates something in the document
(since the StyleRef field accomplishes this purpose). Obviously, section
breaks are necessary when changing page size or orientation, number of
columns, page margins, and the like, or to restart page numbering.
