How can I have all Office Applications start in the background?

I want Microsoft Office to run its applications, but only in the background.
Is there any way to do this, so that if for example I want to open word, it
will very quickly open? Thanks for the help!

Open Microsoft Word, then minimize it to the Taskbar.
You can also drag your Office icons to the Quick Launch
Toolbar.

IF you do not close the application, but minimize it instead, you won't
have to "wait" the next time you use it.

I've always thought that if a few moments of waiting for a program to open
is critical to you, then you really need to re-evaluate your priorities. I
use a 6 year old computer and sometimes it seems like it takes 5 full
seconds to open Word. Maybe even 10 if I haven't rebooted lately. HOWEVER,
those few seconds aren't so terribly important to fuss about. I can go over
and give my husband a quick smooch or scratch one of the cats in those
moments. Good for the soul - and Word will wait until I get back into my
chair. ;-)

Not an issue for me, but perhaps the OP didn't realize he didn't HAVE to
close Word to change documents or some other misunderstanding about the
way applications work. :)
