Hi Joe,
If you're in Word 2007 you can try the Word Options
Office Button=>Word Options=>Popular
to [x] Always use Cleartype (and restart Word)
and the Silver color scheme to see if that's any clearer for you.
If you're in an earlier version of Word right click on the desktop, choose
Properties=>Appearance=>Advanced
and try different settings for the 'Menu' font and others.
