Girdhari,
I'm not aware of any limitation in the number of resource assignments on one
task.
The Ms Project 2003 specifications are not really explicit on this subject :
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP453051461033.aspx
But I made a test with 1000 different resources on the same task without any
problem.
NB : In the Resource Name column, Project displays only 255 characters. But
you can see all the assigned resources in the Task Form.
Hope this helps,

I believe there is a memory-related limitation on the Assign Resources
dialogue, which would be made up of all the resources and their assoc
assignments. This is probably where the bottleneck is.

can i say i really wouldnt recommend that number of assignments to one
task. your making a rod for your back. always consider breaking them
down if you can :)

Hi Carl,

I guess and hope that Girdhari is not assignning these 600 resources on an
elementary task. But on a "vacation" or "sick leave" task in an
administrative projet...

Hi Girdhari --

Why do you need to assign so many resources to a single task? 600-700
assignments on a single task may cause scheduling / maintenance issues,
and I recommend breaking things down a bit.

Is this "general" task an administrative time bucket (vacation,
illness, meetings, etc.)? If so, then one recommendation is to create a
project for each group or department which contains this general task,
then assign only the people in the group to the task. A single person
can manage and update all of the projects, or a person can be selected
from each group to manage the project for their group.

Good luck!
