Completely?

Follow a two day course
Read a book
Start using it
Read this Newsgroup for 5 years and go on using it...
You won't know it really completely but you'll come close :))

Seriously, in terms of speed nithong beats a course, typically 2 days, to
get a good start.
The do it, do it, do it, and ask your questoions here.
Hope this helps

I took a slightly different approach - used the product, wonder why it does
what it does, took a 2 day course where I finally understood. Then I found
this board, and since then I have taken many more courses.

A lot comes from understanding the very basic ideas of what project is
trying to do, and then using it to model a real life simple project.

Good luck, and welcome to MS Project

Adding to the other excellent advice you've received, order a copy of the
Guide To The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBBOK) from the Project
Management Institute, www.pmi.org. Learning everthing about "working the
software" with MS Project can only give you about 50% of the knowledge you
need to actually use it properly. (As an example of what I mean, no amount
of expertise on Adobe Illustrator software would ever make me a graphic
artist.) The other 50% comes from a knowledge of some of the principles of
formal project management, CPM methodology in particular. If the Guide to
the PMBOK mentions MS Project at all, it's only in a footnote. But
understanding the theoretical foundations of PM that the PMBOK discusses is
crucial to an understanding of WHY Project behaves the way it does, which in
turn is the first step in learning how to control its behavior.

If I ever meet someone who knows it completely, I'll ask him/her how
they did it. In the meantime, keep coming back. Even those of us who've
been using it for years (I've been using Project since before Windows,
scheduling software since '84) are still learning. That's the main
reason I come regularly to this NG. I learn something new from the
other experts here nearly everytime.

This is very similar to me.
If you want to learn it VERY quick, take an MSP-teacher for a week and
create a very complex project plan TOGETHER. Then you will know how it
works. But this is the most expensive approach i can imagine.
Otherwise just buy a book, read this NG and create your projectplan
step-by-step.

AND: forget that MSP should help you in the first weeks! It will just
cause you trouble until you understand how it works, how it calculates
efforts and until you generate your first report. If you really put much
effort in it, it will start helping you after a while.

greets, Felix (since 4 years with MSP and still many questions :)

Been with it for 15 yrs, and still many questions. But when I hear
that, the first thing I ask is, "Do you have a GOOD understanding of
CPM?" If you don't, and you get a good understanding, it will answer a
bunch of those questions.
