How can I open a file with Excel, once I have used Word on it?

I have to convert a file from one format to another. I have chosen to use the
search and replace functions in Word, then the computations of Excel. I
could do this in Office before, but since I have "upgraded" to Office X, Excel
refuses to open the file.
I launch Excel. Go through 'File' 'Open...' and select the file.
Then Excel says "This file was opened with Word. Launch Word?" with the
only options of 'OK' (in which case Word opens the file and Excel does not)
or 'Cancel' which cancels the whole operation.
Some upgrade. What before was easy is no longer possible.
Thanks M$.

I don't recall any version of excel that would work like you suggested.

But you may be able to salvage a little bit by opening in word and copying to a
worksheet in a new workbook.

Once the file has been saved as an MSWord document (even if you used a .xls
extension), it's pretty much hosed by excel standards.
