Hi Shareef,

..MDI graphics files open in MS Office Document Imaging,
an optional installation item in Office Xp and Office 2003.
It would be listed under Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office Tools
if that feature has been installed.

I need to open a MDI file but IDO NOT have any MS Office softweare. IS there

The MS .MDI file is a new format for Office 2003 and
so far no viewers for it. You can ask the file creator
to save it as a TIFF file instead from MS Office Document
Imaging.

hmm.. so let me get this straigt..

I am a legal owner of office 2000, and got one of these sent to me by email
by a clueless person who has no idea what tiff is.

So my only option to view this is now to get a pirated version of offfice
2003, as there is no way I am upgrading for a single idiot?

Are you saing that it is Microsofts responsibilty to deal with clueless
idiots on your behalf? What if the clueless idiot sent you a project
file? "Legal owner" of Office 2000 means you are allowed to use Office
2000, and has absolutely no bearing on the the intelligence or
capability of the people you choose to trade files with.

No, that is not my point.

My point is: in the past Microsoft has made viewers available for most of
thir software, seems to me that they are going in a direction that makes it
harder for people.

I would need to upgrade my computer most likely if I wished to use office
2003 as my primary tool.

So the total cost of getting these files would then be most likely about
thousand dollars and a lot of headaches.

For now my solution has to be to just ignore these people, but I sure wish
we were back in the "good old days" when one could get a viewer only fo
filetypes one needed to view, say once a month.

The "forcing" to upgrade is definitely not helping my view of Office as a
product.

When the compability withing office products is this low, I would expect
things like changing to OpenOffice be low pain for many, as the main problems
I have heard about from people have been compability issues.

I am just very annoyed at the fact that some companies have default formats
that can only be read by tools that are not available except at such a steep
premium.

No I am not talking about specific professional or such tools, but mundane
every day things. I mean they have not been able to provide a viewer in more
than a year. Seems that they are trying to either force me to give more money
to intel&co or to drive me away from their products.

Ofcourse if there was really something really worthwhile in office 2003 in
my job of writing simple things fast, things could be different. Or if I
needed to collaborate regulary with someone who uses such tools.

All I am asking for is a simpel viewer, since office 2000 is more than
enough for my needs, and this ned crops up maybe once a month.

But nope.. seems not..

and yes, I am bitter.

Since the matter can be resolved by the "originator" selecting File,
Save As, "tiff", I think perhaps the issue is moot. There is no forcing
of anyone. Please know that the software industry will continue to
evolve and "obsolescence" is the inevitable result of new methods and
techniques.

Jokumuu was not talking about obsolensence he was talking about a total lack
of forethought on the part of MS. I think the lack of a free application to
be able to just view/print MDI files is a gross oversight. All it does is
reinforce the reputation of MS as a monopoly company only interested in
increasing the churn-rate for upgrades for Office.

We also run Office 2000 across our site as it provides all the FUNCTIONALITY
we require. MDI is a new format, I do not expect that my old version of
Office should ever be able to read MDI. I do expect that as a courtesy to
users who may not want to upgrade to a newer version of office that we do not
need for any other reason that to keep up with clients who are merrily
creating MDI format documents on the misguided assumption that it is somehow
a readlily accepted format.

Thankfully I have not had to deal with this MDI fiasco until now and I
notice that depsite this being an issue for sometime MS still has not
released a free viewer.

I think the attitude can be summed up by a poster in another thread who
couldn't understand what the problem was becuase (paraphrasing) "the MDI
viewr/creator comes free with office 2003, thats way better than Adobe." Of
course adobe has a free viewer, so unless Office 2003 is suddenly being given
away free this view point is as mindless as the person who wrote it.

You are entitled to your opinion, but the fact of the matter is that

1. MODI is a utility.
2. Is subject to external license fees for its use.
3. Could go away as quick as it appeared if said fees go up.

Hence the TIFF capability, end of issue.
