This varies between machine/sound-cards and such, but try using the existing
hardware completely independently of PowerPoint.
Plug in your microphone to the laptop.
Open the following sequence -- Start => Control Panel => Sounds and
Audio Devices => Audio (tab) => Playback => Volume => Options => Properties
=> [place a check next to microphone] => OK
Now turn the microphone volume all the way down and un-mute you
microphone fader (now visible) on the volume panel. Slowly adjust the
speaker and microphone volumes paying attention to the microphone distance
from the speakers. You will need to watch the feedback very carefully or
you will give the audience a severe headache.
Laptop speakers are not very powerful, so do not expect a great boost in
volume without adding significant distortion. If this is something you will
be doing a lot, it may be worth consulting a voice specialist who may be
able to teach you how to project your voice without straining it.
