how can I read recovered crashed data

I recently suffered total loss of all my data and had an outfit in my home
town recover, or at least partially recover my data. I do not understand why
I cannot convert the illegible recovered files and "ghost" files to legibel
text. The same is true for picture files which seem to be on the hard drive,
but will not open with a picture. Am I just out of luck, and can you explain
to me in layman terms why the recovery of my data was so sporadic.

This really isn't the correct newsgroup for your issue. I'd suggest starting
with the one that applies to your operating system.

Thats the way things are.. sometimes, the file names exist but the data in
the named file is just too corrupt.. and this is why backups are very
important..
