Do you actually have an analog fax modem in your computer connected to a
telephone line so you can receive facsimile transmissions?

No I do not and in all the reading I;ve done since I posted this, apparently
I can't receive faxes without subscribing to a service which i'm not
interested in doing. I have DSL, no modem. I'll just keep using my one
phone line and turning the fax on and off as annoyingly necessary!

if you send/receive many faxes, try an internet fax service - for as little
as $2 a month and 10 cents a page, you can send and receive faxes by email -
in some cases, your assigned a toll free number. See
http://www.slipstick.com/addins/services/fax.htm#internetfax for options. (I
personally prefer send2fax, listed near the bottom.)

If all you are interesting is in RECEIVING faxes then use eFax. It is a
free service for receiving faxes. You get a fax telephone number but
one that won't be in your area code. The senders sends their fax to
that number and you receive it via e-mail. Don't bother installing
eFax's software as it is a waste of disk space for their free
receive-only service.

If you want to send faxes, you'll have to install an analog fax modem
(to use the Fax service in Windows XP) or use an online faxing service
that allows you to send (but you then might need their software). You
could also look at http://www.tpc.int/ for sending faxes for free but
expect unreliability.
