How can I save a flow chart made in Word as a GIF file?

?!?

I don't know where the author of that article got the idea that images
in Word can't be extracted.

Anyway, you can extract the flowchart in a few easy steps.

-- Select all the shapes and Group them. (I do this to minimuze the
amount of skew in the output image.)
-- Select Edit > Copy from the main menu.
-- Open up an image editor (MS Paint works fine for this) and select
Edit > Paste.
-- Click File > Save As and select GIF as the image type.

One small note - if the lines come out thick and/or jagged in the final
image file, you can minimize this effect by going back to Word and
changing the color of the flowchart shape borders from black to medium
gray. This often produces a cleaner looking image.
