when i get requests for a handout, how can i save it to a word file and
attach it to an email?

Choose File - Send to Word to save your presentation handouts in Word. Or
use Adobe Acrobat or one of the free PDF converters to "print" it to a PDF
file, which you can also easily attach to an email.

If you will be emailing the handout, avoid PowerPoint's native Send to Word
function, the files this generates are generally huge. I would stick with
the PDF or consider the SlideIntoWord add-in I wrote (for this very reason)
