How can I see font changes on the fly?

Processor: Power PC

I need to match a pre-existing font. So I'm using the Word font dropdown. Only thing the text on my page is not changing as I'm scrolling down the font list. It seems I have to click return, look at the font, and then jump back in the list and scroll and repeat this tedious process.

Kev,

For that you need Word 2008. You've been seduced by Microsoft's Marketing
Department!

Do you have the WYSIWYG appearance of the Font menu turned off? If you turn
it on, at least the font name will be in that font, so you can ignore the
obviously inappropriate ones. Word menu => Preferences => General =>
WYSIWYG font and style menus.

It sounds like you're looking for the Live Preview feature of Office 2007 -
Mac Office doesn't have it.

So that didn't make it across to Word 2008, Bob? I was so impressed with
it.

I hereby promise to stop making even the tiniest of assumptions about Word
2008 until I start using it. I will confine myself to Word 2004.

Kevs, sorry about that. :-\

Cheers,

Clive

Hello Clive -

Nah, didn't make it - although I'm not sure that's what he's looking for:)

You pointed him to the best option - unless he actually has the target font
in a doc, in which case he could just click in the text & see what the Font
List on the toolbar/palette had to say. Of course, Font Substitution would
answer the question if he doesn't have that font installed, would it not?

Well, I'd love to chat, but I've got a plane to catch! Will be in touch.

Yes Bob, that's what I want!

Of course I want a live preview, who wouldn't?

I want to see MY TEXT in all the fonts quickly.

Yes, Clive I have that preference already checked.

I don't understand why the dropdown has to disappear like that.

I only see the text of the font name. Pathetic. Isn't Mac supposed to be better?

Anything else I can do?

Apple's Pages does it beautifully. ;-)

Word 2007 does it beautifully. ;-)

In Word 2004 (not sure about 2008 -- see previous fulsome apology), the next
best (albeit pale shadow) option is to select some text, then choose Format
menu => Font => click on one of the fonts in the list. At the bottom of the
pane, "Preview" will show one line of the text in the chosen font. Then
click another font, and so on. This doesn't have the disadvantage of the
disappearing drop-down.
