How can I unlock Word (and other Office applications)?

I am unable to do anything in Microsoft Word such as type, insert pictures,
ect. When I try to type the following message comes up in the bar on the
bottom of the screen "The modification is not allowed because the document is
locked". This also does not allow me to work in Power Point as well.

It either hasn't been activated or it's a trial copy; check the
documentation.
