How can I use a date as part of the criteria in a sumif function..

I'm trying use a date as part of the criteria in the sumif function. Eg.
the criteria would be <=k2. k2 is the cell that contains the date using the
today function. What I'm trying to accomplish is adding cells that have a
date less than today and it's not working properly. If I type in an actual
date it will work however i need to always have todays date in the formula.
