How can I use the mouse or keyboard (or combination) to zoom in and out on a
worksheet in Excel?

Try holding down the CTRL key and using the mouse wheel

Hold CTRL nad scroll with the wheel = Zoom in/out

I tried that and it didn't work. Is there a setting somewhere (within
Excel) that needs to be checked?

Using Tools/Options/General Tab
There is a setting for Zoom on roll with IntelliMouse

Checking this allows to zoom using Mouse wheel - for me anyway
Try that - another option is to try a different mouse if you have one spare?
