How can MS Word be improved?

Agreed. That's why Microsoft has a potential future revenue-stream problem.

It still lacks features like booklet production that publisher has. I would
rather Publisher were enhanced to have greater control over page numbers and
to be able to start logical p1 on physical p5 etc. I wold like publisher to
have VBA support so i could really automate booklet production. As I can't
see MS spending money on publisher I want to see those features in Word so i
can automate production of booklets.

Not sure what the problem is, but I can't see why you can't do what you
want in Word no ... please elaborate on the shortcomings.

(Publisher is a rinky-dink desktop publisher, by the way...not much
chance it will get better to do this automation ... maybe you want/need
something other than Word even).

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Hi Alan,

I assume that 'it' means MS Word in this case? :)

What version of MS Office Publisher are you using?
Some VBA support was added starting with Publisher 2002.
You may want to check with the folks in the Publisher
newsgroup for additional information.

Word does have a booklet capability, but keep in
mind that Word is text reflow software rather than
page layout software.

MS's e-books (MS Reader) is where some of the 'booklet'
capabilities were focused in development.

In your scenario, If you use Insert=>Section in Publisher
to start a new section at physical page 5 of the overall
booklet/catalog you can have the page number start with
'1' on the first page of the section.

There is 3rd party software targeted for the booklet
market as well.
