How can recalculation be set to "row wise" or column wise" ?

[Looking for rowwise recalculation]

In older versions of excel, recalculation could be set to "rowwise or column
wise" which avoided some circular references. More recent versions do not
seem to have that capability. How can this be achived with new versions?
