How can you count three seperate 'things' in one column?

Hi all,

I have a spreadsheet column where each cell will either have a tick, a
cross
or is left blank. How can I setup three cells to show how many
ticks,
crosses and blanks there are in the column?

I hope this is clear as what I am trying to do.
