How can you resize a link bar? (make it wider to fit tethe text)

I am trying to increase the width of a link bar - in this case with
navigation structure based links - I cannot find any documenetation to
support this function. IN this particular case the link text is being
truncated because it is too wide for the link bar. Any suggestions?

The images (buttons) for the nav are from a theme
You can only create larger images for the theme, then modify the theme to use the larger buttons
