How come my ruler does not open automatically when I open Word?

For some reason my ruler does not open when I open Word. I use the print
layout view.

I'd like the ruler to show up whenever I open a new document and open Word.

Take a look at the View Menu, make sure Ruler is selected. If Ruler is
turned on when you exit from Word it should display when you relaunch. Is
this *not* the case?

Frequently, I'm sorry to say. Usually Word opens in Normal view, with ruler,
as desired (and as it was when I closed down), but more often that I like it
opens in Print Layout view and/or without the ruler. Even with the ruler
displayed in Document1, frequently other documents open without the ruler
even though it was displayed the last time they were opened. It's very
puzzling.

This seems to be an effect of SDI in Word 2000 and above. Sometimes you have
to get draconian and use an AutoExec and/or AutoOpen macro to force the
ruler.

If further problems, mention what version of Word & Windows.
