how deep does Access file search go?

W

We

I work at a library, and we're planning to use Access to index our campus
newspaper. I can create all the fields, I need, and we're going to attach
e-copies of the article. Is the text of these files searchable in any way,
or does Access only search its own fields, acknowledge that the record has a
file attached, and stop there? Because we're a library, the retrievability
of those files is very important to us. Will the Access system read their
contents at all, or not? Could it read them if we saved them as a different
format, or not?

Thanks very much.

Access would probably not be the best tool for this. I can't think of what
is available at the moment, but there are much better text search databases
available. I would try googling "text search database" and see what comes up.

Access can be made to search memo fields, but it's not very fast on anything
that's not indexed (and you cannot index memos).

AskSam is a well regarded system for full text search and retrieval.
