How do I activate auto- back up in Microsoft Office?

Recently Microsoft made a Windows update that I hadn't asked for (I was
having dinner at the time!) , re-booted my computer without my say-so and I
lost unsaved work in MS-Excel because my auto-back-up recovery wasn't working
(although it looks like it should be -- I haven't de-activated what I thought
was a default). Can anyone help me prevent a recurrence of the problems --
(a) I want auto - back up invoked (b) I want to prevent Microsoft re-booting
my PC without my permission.

You received the update and reboot because your system is set to do it.
Change your setting to not auto-install updates and the situation is
corrected.
