How do I add a check box?

I would like to add a check box to my exel sheet. I was able to figure
out how to add the actual check box, but now I can not find where I can
"activate" it, so that I can go in and check or un-check the box.

Not sure what you mean by "go in and check...". If you placed a checkbox
from the Forms toolbar on your sheet, then selecting anything else
(e.g., a cell) will unselect the checkbox, after which you should be
able to click on the checkbox, toggling the checkmark.
