How do I read the system "last modified date" and place it in a document
automatically?

Click "Insert", "Field", and pick "SaveDate". You could also press the
F1 key and look it up.

You missed the key word in the 1st post "automatically." MS Word seems NOT
to have a way to automaticlly update fields.

At home I use Lotus Word-Pro and what they call Power Fields have an option
you can set to automaticlly update a field. In the case of their version of
SAVEDATE, when you save the document it >> automaticlly << updates the
SAVEDATE field then saves.

So, is there a way to do this through Macros or something? Automatically
update the SAVEDATE field on saving a doc.

This is an option that MS missed, why have a SAVEDATE field if you must
manually update it every time?
