How do I alter the template "Normal"?

I have opened this from the "Documents &
Settings/Microsoft/Templates" and made
alterations by inserting the page number and
a new font size, but I cannot save it.

Please help, Frank.

Well that's how I've always done it myself, just navigated to the
normal.dot file and set it up as I wanted then saved it. It certainly
works. I usually copy the original in case of trouble but I've never had
any so far.

Mind you, I can't help feeling there must be a more menu based method.
It's just that I could never find it.
