How do I assign existing shapes on a drawing to a new layer?

I have an existing plan drawing and have place electrical and telecom shapes
on the drawing, but now I want to select some of these shapes and create a
new layer comprised of the selected shapes. How can I do this?

Thanks.

Select the shapes, then menu Format -> Layer -> New
and type the new layer name.
The new layer will be added to the selected shape's properties..
