How do I auto number shapes?

I have created several shapes that have callout numbers attached by a small
squiggly line. I want the callout numbers to be automatic when 1. reordering
a page, the numbers would automatically change (ie page 1, with a series of
numbers 100, 110, etc. to change automatcially to page 2, number 200, 210,
etc); 2. adding new shapes, the numbers are not automatically added - add
numbers to selected squigglies only. I have shapes that describe a system,
but do not always callout each shape in the text of my document.

First try Tools > Add-ons > Visio Extras > Number Shapes to see if that tool
works for what you need. If not, then you will need to write some code that
analyzes the shapes in the drawing and assigns numbers to them.

Is there a way to assign auto numbers to the squigglies only? That way I can
have several shapes (w/no numbers), except for the ones that I attach a
squiggly. I have seen drawings with auto numbers, but all the shapes had
numbers. I don't need all the shapes to be assigned a number, just the ones
that I refer to in my Word doc.

First try Tools > Add-ons > Visio Extras > Number Shapes to see if that tool

Number Shapes has a manual mode where you can click on the shapes in the
sequence you want. I don't know of a way to tell it which shapes to exclude
other than connectors.

I see how to manually select the figures so that they are sequential. What I
need to know next is, now that the numbers are selected, I may want to
reorder my pages and have the numbers change automatically to reflect the new
pages. Ex: page 1 has all callout numbers in the 100 range, page 2 has all
callout numbers in the 200 range and each page has a FIG. # at the bottom to
identify the page. I want to swap pages. Now the callout numbers in the 100
range are in the 200 range and the 200 range numbers are now in the 100
range, and FIG. # has also changed with FIG. 1 now showing as FIG. 2 and FIG.
2 is now FIG. 1. I was sent a drawing that does this and want to recreate
it. Would it be easier to forward you the drawing so that you can see it?

I don't know of a way to do this with Number Shapes. You can insert a text
field to display the page number in shapes, but you need to append the
digits for the shape number. Number Shapes will generate the digits, but it
blasts away the text field when it applies.
