How do I cancel a read receipt???

I received an email from someone with a read receipt
notification set. The problem is Outlook 2003 is
attempting to send the read receipt via an smtp account
that I have no access to at my location. How can I stop
the read receipt from being sent as it isn't in
the "outbox" and nothing happens after I delete the
original email?
