Select the cells in questions and do format>cells>alignment and check center
across selections

I find that this does a merge which the OP did not want.

It may look like it's merged the cells, but each cell is still treated as an
indiviual cell, so this method should work.

Center across selection wipes the gridlines, but the individual cells are
preserved, unlike a true merge.
