How do i change the display name of an email address

Outlook 2000
I've created a contact called "X". I've added multiple email addresses. When
browsing to the contacts when creating a new email, the addresses appear as
"Mr X (E-mail)", "Mr X (E-mail 2)" etc. I don't know which is which without
investigating the properties.

Therefore my question is how do i change the Display name so i can
distinguish the email addresses from each other. When i go to the "SMTP -
Address" tab of the property page of the contact email address the Display
name is read-only.

thanks

s'ok i've found out through trial and error. Right-clicking on the email
address in the contact puts the properties up with a writable version of the
display name.

Outlook 2000 help, type in "change contact display name", no help whatsoever.

Open the Contact. Select the address you want from the "E-mail" drop-down.
Select the "Display As" field. Enter into it what you want.

thanks for replying

yes i have tried this - it doesn't work. i have opened the contact,
right-clicked on the email address in the "E-mail" field to pop up
properties. Changed the Display Name to something appropriate e.g. "Mr X Work
Email" and saved.

I then create an email, hit "To", select "Contacts" from the dropdown. It
still says "Mr X (E-mail)" and "Mr X (E-mail 2)" and i have no idea which is
the work email and which is the home email.

Please help?? I cannot believe no-one has ever had this problem before. ...
am i missing something simple ????

ps i assume changing the display name in the properties of the email address
in the contact is what you meant - there is no "Display As" field.

Immediately below the E-mail field at the top of the right hand side of the
contact record is "Display as". Whatever string you enter into this field
will be shown in the "Display Name" (the second) column of the address book.
However, this is in Outlook 2002/2003.

For Outlook 2000, the values of "E-mail" and "E-mail2" can be seen in the
third column. he first column will contain, as you see, "Mr. X (E-mail)"
and "Mr. X (E-mail2)". Slide to the right and the second column will
display the type of address (SMTP, EX, FAX, etc.). The third column will
display the actual address. In addition to sliding to the right, you can
expland the size of the address book window by clicking and dragging its
border so you can see more of the entry.

A-Ha!!!

yes, i am using Outlook 2000 (see original post)

i didn't spot the scroll bar at the bottom of the select names listbox. I
still think it's daft that if you change the Display Name of the Contact
email to "Mr X Work", it doesn't update the contact email address list when
creating an email (right-click for properties from the name in this list and
it insists Display Name is still "Mr X (E-mail)")

however you've solved my problem in that i don't have to keep opening the
properties of the contact to find out which is which, i simply scroll across.

thanks for your help!
